A 5-minute speech is about 600 to 800 words, or roughly 700 words at an average speaking pace of 140 words per minute.

Most people speak somewhere between 120 and 160 words per minute when giving a speech. Nerves tend to speed people up; pauses, emphasis and audience reactions slow them down.

The formulas:

  • Words needed = minutes × words per minute
  • Speaking time = words ÷ words per minute

A 1,000-word speech at 140 words per minute runs a little over 7 minutes.

Common speeches and their length

  • Elevator pitch (30–60 seconds): about 70–140 words.
  • Wedding toast (2–4 minutes): about 300–550 words. Shorter is almost always better.
  • Best man or maid of honor speech (3–5 minutes): about 400–700 words.
  • Class presentation (5–10 minutes): about 700–1,400 words, less if you're showing slides or demonstrating something.
  • Eulogy (5–10 minutes): about 700–1,400 words. Emotional moments take extra time; leave room for them.
  • Conference or TED-style talk (up to 18 minutes): about 2,300–2,700 words.

Why your speech may run long

Written word counts assume you read without stopping. Real speeches include:

  • Pauses for emphasis and to let a point land.
  • Laughter and applause, which can add 10–30 seconds at a time.
  • Slides and demonstrations, where you're talking less but the clock keeps running.
  • Ad-libs, which almost always add time.

If you have a hard limit, aim for about 90% of the time with your script, leaving room for the unexpected.

How to time your speech

  1. Read the speech aloud at the pace you'll actually use, not your reading-in-your-head pace.
  2. Time it with your phone's stopwatch.
  3. Divide your word count by the minutes to find your personal pace.
  4. Cut or add material to fit. Cutting is almost always the right move.

How many slides do you need?

A common rule of thumb is about one slide per minute, so 10 to 12 slides for a 10-minute presentation. Slides packed with detail need longer; simple image slides go faster. If you're speaking from a script, plan roughly 100–150 words per slide.

Writing for the ear

Listeners can't reread a sentence, so spoken writing works best when it's simple:

  • Use short sentences and everyday words.
  • Say where you're going ("I want to share three things...").
  • Repeat your main point near the end.
  • Read it aloud while drafting, and rewrite anything you stumble over.

Check your word count and speaking time

Paste your script into the Word Counter. It shows the word count along with an estimated speaking time based on 150 words per minute, a comfortable conversational pace. If you're writing to a page count instead, see how many words are on a page.
